Product description

The CD P. J. Hannikaisen kauneimmat, released by Bells Publishing in 2009, contains choral and solo songs composed by P. J. Hannikainen. The recordings were made in Tulindberg Hall at Oulu Conservatory and in Karjasilta Church, and Samuli Sorvari and Olli Heikkilä are responsible for the recording. The album has a total of 27 tracks, including Karjalaisten laulu, Suojelusenkeli, Pyhäaamun rauha, Oravan pesä, and Kevätlaulu. Marko Ollila sings as soloist, and Arto Heikkilä plays the piano. Alongside Hannikainen's own lyrics, texts for the songs were written by Immi Hellén, Eino Leino, Vilkku Joukahainen, and Aleksanteri Rahkonen, among others. Composer P. J. Hannikainen was born in 1854 and died in 1924. He was a chemist by education and almost self-taught in music. Hannikainen founded Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat in 1882, served as the first Finnish-language music and theatre critic for Uusi Suometar, and founded Finland's first music magazine, Säveleitä. In 1887, he moved to become lecturer in music at Jyväskylä Teacher Seminary, where he trained primary school teachers for 30 years. He dedicated his first choral composition, Unilaulu, to his wife Alli in 1890, and over thirty years approximately 250 choral, school, and other songs were created. His sons Ilmari, Tauno, Arvo, and Väinö grew up to become internationally known musicians. Singing on the album are Karjasilta Parish's mixed choir Cantio Laudis, founded in 2006 and conducted by Olli Heikkilä, and the Oulu-based male choir Mieskuoro Weljet, founded in 1998 and conducted by Jussi Linnanmäki.
