Product description

Kainuu is a CD released in 2011 that brings together cantatas for mixed choir by Einojuhani Rautavaara. The works were recorded in the Estonia Opera concert hall in October 2008. The album was published by Bells Publishing, and the recording engineer was Maido Maadik. The album has seven tracks, performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of conductor Timo Nuoranne. The movements of the five-part Kainuu cantata are Kaukamoinen, Manaus, Ihmisparka, Arkkiveisu, and Kainuunhautojat, with Mika Nuojua appearing as reciter and Madis Metsamart playing percussion. The collection is completed by the cantatas Ylistyspsalmi and Odotus, in which Piret Aidulo plays the organ. Rautavaara composed the Kainuu cantata in 1975 as a commissioned work for the 250th anniversary of Paltaniemi church, celebrated in 1976. The subject of the Kaukamoinen movement is the story of King Faravid of Kainuu from Egil Skallagrímsson's saga. Manaus depicts the settling of the wilderness, and Ihmisparka the hardships of the Great Wrath, drawing on Juhana Cajanus's hymn Etkö ole ihmisparka. Arkkiveisu uses a letter from the 1600s by Paltamo churchman Johannes Cajanus, and the concluding Kainuunhautojat depicts the battles of the Winter War in Kainuu with Rautavaara's own text. The texts of the Odotus cantata (1978), commissioned for the inauguration of Ristinkirkko in Lahti, are from the liturgy of Advent Sunday. Ylistyspsalmi (1979), composed for the inauguration of Espoonlahti church, is based on Kolmen miehen kiitosvirsi tulessa from the Apocrypha.
