Kainuu – Einojuhani Rautavaara's Cantatas for Mixed Choir and Instruments Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928–2016) is one of Finland's most significant and internationally renowned composers, whose output spans a wide range of choral, orchestral, and chamber music works. Kainuu is a recording that showcases the powerful expression and artistic versatility of Rautavaara's cantatas. The main work on the album is the five-part cantata Kainuu, composed in 1975 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Paltamo church. The work combines mixed choir, narrator, and percussion, creating an atmosphere where shamanistic rhythms and profound textual choices merge into a unique choral drama. In the work Kainuu, Rautavaara particularly draws on his own text, in which the narrator takes center stage, conveying the story of historical Kainuu through Egil Skallagrimsson's saga. The dialogue between the narrator and the choir, as well as the percussion's shamanistic contributions, bring out the work's introspective yet epic expression. This cantata not only celebrates the history of Kainuu, but also serves as a timeless commentary on humanity's relationship with its environment and cultural heritage. The album's two other cantatas, Odotus (1978) and Ylistyspsalmi (1979), complement the whole with their liturgical and spiritual themes. Odotus is a cantata composed for the consecration of the Church of the Cross in Lahti, in which choir and organ unite with the liturgical texts of Advent Sunday. Rautavaara's neo-romantic style is particularly evident in this work's use of synthetic scales and a 12-tone row, which bring depth and tension to the musical expression. Ylistyspsalmi, on the other hand, draws from Old Testament hymnody and is a six-minute hymn of praise in which the choir acts as the sole interpreter, highlighting Rautavaara's skill in composing evocative choral works. The performers on the recording, such as the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, narrator Mika Nuojua, percussionist Madis Metsamart, and organist Piret Aidulo, bring Rautavaara's works to life with their superb interpretation. The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, known for its extensive repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary music, interprets the compositions with sophistication and sensitivity.
