Foreword
Getsemanen puutarhassa was compiled as a final project for cantor master's studies at the Sibelius Academy. A cantor then brought up the idea that it is difficult to find usable music for a church choir for Holy Week. This gave rise to the idea of composing Finnish music that is reasonably easy to adopt, through which it would be possible to get into the atmosphere of Holy Week.
The miniature passion was compiled with the idea that its performance is possible with a relatively small ensemble: in addition to the choir, only an organist and a cellist are needed. Of course, soloists are also needed for the parts of Pietari, Jeesus, Pilatus and his wife, but singers for these can probably be found, for instance, from among the choir members. I feel it is important that the congregation can also participate, which is why congregational singing is also included.
In terms of timing, Getsemanen puutarhassa is best suited to be performed between Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday, in which case it can serve as a link between the holy days. The institution of the Lord's Supper and the crucifixion have deliberately been omitted from the work. In this way, the feast days are not deprived of their deepest message.
I hope that through the work, the events of Holy Week could come close to the listener and that, despite its dark tone, it would bring hope from the light of the sacrifice of the cross.
