Laulava postiljooni: Esko Jurvelinin tarina is a short biography of the tenor Esko Jurvelin from Oulu, who was born in 1935 in Hietasaari, Oulu. The book describes his character, his most important life stages, and part of his pedagogical secrets. In the Jurvelin family, there have been cantors in Utajärvi and Muhos across four generations, and the family's musical tradition extends back nearly 150 years. Jurvelin began his career as a postman and rose to become a star of Finnish opera and a soloist at the Finnish National Opera. According to a news item from Kaleva quoted on the back cover of the book, in early autumn 1962 he was still making his rounds with his mailbag in Tuira when another postman brought him a letter from opera director Alfons Almi, who invited him to Helsinki. After an opera career of a few years, Jurvelin returned to his home town of Oulu as a postman and singing teacher, and his students have repeatedly achieved success in singing competitions. The themes of the work include childhood in Hietasaari, wartime and the years as a war child in Sweden, studies and opera career, vocal teaching in Oulu, success in singing competitions, concerts, church music, recordings, and singing courses, as well as discussions on voice production and the structure of a singing lesson. The book opens with Niilo Rauhala's chapter Laulu on soinut elämässämme, which recounts his and Jurvelin's joint song and poetry evenings, including in Oulu Cathedral. In the section bringing together memories from friends, colleagues, and students, Risto Ainali, Ahti Alatalo, Ritva Auvinen, Collin Hansen, Eero Harmaala, Arto Heikkilä, Ilkka Kuusisto, Matti Lehtinen, Heikki Rainio, Petrus Schroderus, Eliisa Suni, Helena Tiainen, and Keijo Nissilä write about Jurvelin. The book is hardback and illustrated in colour. It is illustrated with oil paintings of Hietasaari landscapes by Jurvelin's father and photographs from the family album, and the historical photos of Hietasaari are from Ulla Pohjamo's study Esikaupunki moniäänisenä kulttuuriperintönä: Oulun Hietasaari (2011). Some of those involved in the book project have been private students or summer course students of Jurvelin. The foreword to the book is dated in Oulu on St Thomas' Day 21.12.2018. The work was published by Bells Publishing in 2018, and it is a 203-page first edition. The ISBN of the book is 978-952-67193-3-7. It was edited by Seppo Heikkilä, Sirpa Heikkilä, Olli Heikkilä, Jari Heikkilä, Katriina Heikkilä, Juha Hakulinen, Ville-Veikko Telkki, and Esko Alasaarela.
